Porcupine anyone???
For now just a short blurb
and a couple pictures. The Fisher is part of the weasel family
and is the only animal I can think of that kills and eats porcupines
succesfully. Mostly black in colour with some brown and usually
some white, the females usually bring the highest dollar at auction
and they use to be quite valued
bringing in over $200.00 a hide. They are a trap only animal
in Ontario which requires a quota to harvest them but are commonly
caught in Raccoon sets and sometimes in dirthole sets for fox
and coyotes. I think they are an animal I would not let me hound
get to close to... To me anything that kills porkies has my respect.
Anyhow, I've weighed a few and large ones will weigh in over
15 pounds. I've had them come into calls
and occasionally had one cruise by me while I've been bow hunting
on the ground. Funny.. the last one I
watched in the woods came within two feet of my face walking
down a bent over tree. I had to stand up
and give her a scare.. don't need one climbing on my head. They
are excellent climbers and eat bunnies,
porkies and what ever else they can catch and eat. I've also
heard the odd story about a fisher killing a dog.
