Kinmount

(PICTURES)

Kinmount is the northeastern community in the area that we serve. Kinmount is now developing the historic Austin Saw Mill which serves as a reminder of the logging history of the area. The old Railway Station has been refurbished and now has a model train station set up for you to view. On the Labour Day weekend is the Kinmount Fall Fair - "The Fair with the Forward Look" which is one of the largest in Ontario.

Kinmount's history really dates from the construction of the Bobcaygeon Road. Sometime in 1857 or 1858 the road reached the Burnt River and a bridge was constructed. The community was called Burnt River when a post office was opened in 1859. The name was derived from the Scottish settlers telling how they "Kin-Mount" the steep hills prominent in the town.

Kinmount has always been a lumber town. Six saw mills operated in and around the town, shipping products out on the railway. Kinmount potatoes were famous all over the area back then.

Today the old railway lines makes an excellent path for hiking, biking and snowmobiling. You can easily travel from Haliburton or to Lindsay (and beyond) using this trail.

Also, when in Kinmount be sure to visit the famous Highlands Theatre, located on the north end of the community. There is an amazing collection of antique movie cameras and other movie memorabilia for you to browse.
