At Big Brothers and Big Sisters our screening process is very thorough and extensive. We do everything possible to make sure the Parent/Guardian of the children we serve will be comfortable with the Big Brother or Big Sister we have selected. |

When a person enquires about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, they are presented information to review prior to an interview. At this time, we discuss our program further and when a person feels they can fulfill all of the expectations, a First Interview is completed. During this introductory interview, an applicant is required to give us the names and addresses of seven people we will send a reference form to. This includes three character references, a family member, their employer, their significant other and their doctor. Each applicant also must go, in person, to the police station to be screened by the police. Applicant's then must arrange for an Interview Two, which is done in their home and lasts for about two hours. This is a fairly in-depth interview starting with where the applicant was born, everything that happened in their life and ending with their life goals. We also ask some personal questions regarding such issues as drugs, alcohol, and emotional stability.
Bare in mind that the Parents/Guardians of the children we serve must allow their child to become friends with a "stranger" - which is initially what they are to the family. We understand and appreciate this, which is why our screening process needs to be thorough and extensive. |
